Activities to do in Merzouga Desert Morocco

Merzouga is best known for its golden sand dunes skirting the majestic Erg Chebbi. But that’s not all. It is unfortunate that most visitors do not linger to explore this region which has hidden treasures. We will fix it right away! Here are some of Merzouga desert activities

1- Camel caravan and night in the desert bivouac
Immerse yourself in a postcard decor while crossing the Erg Chebbi on the back of a camel. Spend the night with nomads under the stars or in Berber bivouacs in the middle of an ocean of dunes.

2- Make a cure of arenotherapy (sand bath)
Sore muscles or rheumatism. Let yourself be buried in the hot desert sand of Merzouga known for its therapeutic properties. (This meant for summer time)

3- Discover the Gnaoua musicand their culture
The village of Khamlia 7 km from Merzouga nicknamed “the black village” bears witness to the indelible traces of trans-Saharan trade. The group “Les Pigeons des Sables” play and sing the trance tunes of Sahara music.

4- Take a walk in the oases of Merzouga
The fertile oases of Merzouga appear like mirages in the desert. Sip a good mint tea in the company of oasis people who have preserved their ancestral culture.

5- Excursion to the palm grove of Tafilalet
It is the largest palm grove in the world with its sublime date palm plantation, but also its acacia forest to meet Oued Ziz and Oued Gheris. A moment becomes absolute serenity.

6- Visit the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji
In spring only, some seasonal lakes reappear in these arid lands north-west of Merzouga. The site of Dayet Srji is a favorite place to observe flamingos.

7- Stroll in the souk of Rissani
Make plenty of local products and craft souvenirs at the souk of Rissani, a market that comes alive all the more on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. I advise you to buy the Tafilalet dates and the blue men’s stuffs.

8- Visit Ksours and Mausoleums of Rissani
Who said there were no monuments to visit in the region of Merzouga? Rissani is the cradle of the Alawite dynasty ( the actual reigning monarch). Do not miss the ksar Moulay Ismaïl and the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif.

9- Go to the fossil hunt
The region of Erg Chebbi is rich in Jurassic fossils, rock carvings, and minerals. Visit galena mines, and go in search of trilobite fossils!

10- Roadtrip in the Gorges of Todra and Dades
By taking the road from Merzouga to Ouarzazate, take the path that passes through the village of Tinghir. The road of 1000 Kasbahs crossing the Todra valley and the Dades Valley is one of the most beautiful sites in Morocco.

11- Eat Medfouna
Medfouna is a specialty of the Tafilalet region. It is a bun stuffed with slightly spicy ground meat, poached eggs, onions, and other secret ingredients. we still lick our fingers! These are only some of Merzouga desert you can opt for, but theere aare others you can discover on the spot area.
